Lo diciamo spesso: nonostante la fama imperitura delle Air Force 1, le migliori scarpe da basket dei primi anni Ottanta rimangono le Nike Legend. Non a caso erano le più amate dai giocatori professionisti, non a caso fu sulla base delle Legend che i designer dello Swoosh svilupparono le Air Jordan 1 e le Terminator. La linea sobria e la silhouette dalle proporzioni semplicemente perfette nascondevano alcuni accorgimenti tecnici considerati utili per chi giocava a basket, come ad esempio un certo supporto intorno alla caviglia e un pannello traforato sulla parte frontale per aiutare la traspirazione del piede. Ai tempi non si parlava ancora di Player Exclusive, ma molte Legend vennero personalizzate da Nike per i grandi campioni del tempo: le usava ad esempio Pat Ewing ai tempi dell’università (Georgetown), prima di passare allo sponsor adidas. Ma anche un giocatore forse meno noto dalle nostre parti, ma di altissimo livello come Alton Lister, a cui appartenevano le Legend che vi mostriamo in queste pagine: Gigante texano, Lister ha giocato da centro prima nei Milwaukee Bucks, poi le sue stagioni migliori nei Seattle Supersonics di fine Ottanta, prima di chiudere la sua lunga carriera (17 anni sui parquet dell’NBA) con le maglie di Boston e Portland.

We often make the following point: despite the everlasting success of the Air Force 1, the best basketball shoes of the early Eighties is and will always be the Nike Legend. It’s no surprise it was the most beloved by the professional players, nor is a surprise that on the basis of the Legend the designers of the Swoosh developed the Air Jordan 1 and the Terminator. The sober line and the perfectly balanced silhouette would conceal some technical solutions that were much useful for basket players, like for example a certain support surrounding the ankle and a perforated panel on the frontal part to help increase the foot’s perspiration. Back then there was no idea of Player Exclusive, but many Legend’s were personalized by Nike for the great champions of the time. Pat Ewing, for example, used to wear them at university (in Georgetown) before moving to adidas as a sponsor. And even a player perhaps less known over here, but still a top notch, like Alton Lister owned the Legend we show you in these pages. A Texan giant, Lister played as a mid in the Milwaukee Bucks, and subsequently he spent his better seasons in the late Eighties Seattle Supersonic, before finishing his long carrier (17 years on the NBA parquets) with the strips of Boston and Portland.
